A pulmonary hypertension diagnosis meant bedside ER shift work was no longer sustainable. It didn't end the mission — it evolved it. The same equipment on this nightstand every night — a Philips SimplyGo and a ResMed AirSense 11 — is the reason connected medical device risk isn't theoretical here. It's lived.

That's the perspective behind Scenario 7 of the DFR Lab: a walkthrough of what a firmware compromise on a connected CPAP device actually looks like, built from the position of someone who depends on the device working correctly every night, not just someone auditing it from the outside.

How the framework thinks about a system

The human body is a useful model for how security systems are supposed to work together — each layer catching what the last one missed.
